GCMS Notes Processing Time: How Long Does It Take?

One of the first questions applicants ask is simply: how long until I actually have my GCMS notes in hand? Here is what to expect and what can speed things up or slow them down.

The legal timeline: 30 days

Under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act, IRCC has 30 calendar days to respond to an ATIP request. In many cases, applicants receive their notes within roughly that window. However, the law also permits IRCC to take extensions in certain circumstances — for example, when a request is large or requires consultations — so the 30-day figure is a target, not a guarantee.

What can delay your notes

• An incorrect or incomplete IMM 5744 consent form, which can cause the request to be returned before it is even processed.
• Mismatched personal details between your request and IRCC's records.
• High request volumes at IRCC.
• Extensions taken for large files or required internal consultations.

How to avoid common delays

1. Double-check that your name and date of birth match your official documents exactly.
2. Include your UCI and application number so IRCC can locate your file quickly.
3. Make sure the IMM 5744 is signed and dated.
4. Submit the request as soon as you want visibility — there is no benefit to waiting.

If you order through GCMS.ca, you can follow your request from your status dashboard and we email you when there is an update. If you filed directly with IRCC, you will receive your response package through the channel you selected when you applied.
